Design Styles: Japandi

As much as I love bold patterns and eccentric interiors, there is a certain allure and sophistication to the Japandi design style that cannot be ignored. The name itself is an ode to the styles it is inspired by, Japanese design and Scandinavian, “Scandi”, design. Interiors in this style may at first be perceived as mid century, but in fact they are quite distinct in their features. Although it is a relatively new style, Japandi is quickly solidifying itself as a style that is here to stay. It takes merges its two parent styles to create subtle yet impactful interiors that are grounding and soothing.

Japandi combines the best features of Japanese and Scandinavian design. So what does each style contribute?

Japanese interior design is known for its simplicity and minimalism, with a focus on natural materials such as wood and stone. The colour palette is typically neutral with hints of brown, beige, and green, and the space is organised in a way that promotes peace and calm. Furnishings are often low to the ground and items are carefully placed to create a sense of balance and harmony. Wabi-sabi is also a central consideration in Japanese design. In the context of design and architecture, wabi-sabi emphasizes the use of natural materials, an absence of excess ornamentation, and a focus on the passage of time. The goal is to create spaces that are understated, peaceful, and bring people into a state of mindfulness and introspection.

Scandinavian interior design, on the other hand, is characterized by its use of light colors, clean lines, and functional design. Natural light is emphasized and furniture is designed to maximize the use of space. The style often incorporates organic materials, such as wood and wool, and incorporates nature into the design through the use of plants and natural textures. Hygge is a concept that greatly influences Scandinavian interior design. It's about creating a warm, inviting atmosphere through small pleasures, such as lighting candles, drinking hot tea, or curling up with a good book. The goal is to cultivate a sense of happiness and well-being in everyday life.

Why does Japandi work?

Japandi is the fusion of these two styles, taking the best of both worlds to create a unique and harmonious design style. Japandi incorporates the simplicity and minimalism of Japanese design with the light and functional elements of Scandinavian design. The result is a warm and inviting space that feels serene and peaceful, while also being functional and practical. Japandi brings out the best in each style; for example the deeper tones in the Japanese colour palette results in richer wood tones being used. This depth injects some soul into the space and keeps it from feeling too clinical. Equally, the more rustic elements of Scandinavian design help to relax the more sleek style and sharp edges associated with Japanese design. The combination of natural materials, such as wood and stone, creates a warm and inviting environment that feels both natural and comfortable. The use of neutral colours and minimal furnishings creates a sense of calm and balance, while the focus on natural light and functional design adds a touch of practicality and functionality.

In summary, Japandi is the perfect combination of Japanese and Scandinavian interior design, taking the best of both worlds to create a harmonious and beautiful design style that promotes peace, comfort, and functionality.
